Coooee Book RoundUp is based in Sydney, Australia and is run entirely by volunteers.

Brief: School Libraries ‘weed’ numerous books each year to make room for new book purchases and to keep collections current. Often weeded books are in good condition and have rarely been used. Increasingly, schools find it difficult to give these books away to new homes and Opportunity Shops no longer receive such donations. Regrettably, these books often end up in landfill. 
Many school libraries in low SES areas are inadequately funded with good quality relevant books for their libraries. We would like to find a good homes for 'unwanted' books in good condition for these under-funded school libraries. We would also like to gift books so that every student will receive at least one book to take home.

Coooee Book RoundUp would like to gift these books to First Nations Students to build a love of reading, increase educational outcomes and help close the gap.

Phase One:

Primary and Secondary schools in the Sydney metropolitan area are contacted via school networks to:
1. Seek donations of good quality books, and
2. Seek volunteers who can sort and process book donations and/or travel to remote NSW to deliver books
 
- CBR’s emphasis will be to supply books in low SES schools with high Aboriginal population. All students in said schools, however, will receive a book, regardless of their heritage. Wherever possible, the founders and other volunteers would like to travel at the same time to meet with school staff and students to distribute books. With school and parent permission, students will be photographed with gifted books to promote Coooee Book RoundUp to help secure further book donations and volunteers.

- Secure a storage space to store books. Ideally, the storage space will provide enough room to sort and process books. This will involve wiping down books, attaching a CBR sticker and sorting books by Year levels (Pre-2, 3-6, 7-9, 10-12). In return, the storage company’s logo will appear on all of our promotional material, website and Facebook page.

- Secure transportation company to transport books to schools once per school term. Ideally, these companies will cover the costs of a truck, driver and their accommodation and fuel. In return, the transport company’s logo will appear on all of our promotional material, website and Facebook page.

- Secure two lockable Skip Bins. One for paper recycling and one for landfill. Realistically, despite our best efforts, there will be times that schools/people will donate books that are damaged or in poor condition. In this instance if the books are covered with contact, the covers will be removed and the pages recycled. In return, the company’s logo will appear on all of our promotional material, website and Facebook page.

Further Expansion Possibilities
CBR will be seeking donations of new books from books suppliers and publishers. Ideally we would like to secure culturally appropriate Aboriginal books such as those published by Magabala Books - Australia’s leading Indigenous publishing house.

CBR is currently seeking approval for Deductible Gift Recipient status. Should this be approved we can begin fundraising and seeking donations to purchase new books, stationery and backpacks for students in remote NSW Aboriginal communities. There is scope after time, to also support Aboriginal communities in other states in Australia.

There is also scope to secure library furniture and shelving still in good condition that are needed by outback school libraries.
